RAINI, RIKER, KATIE AND ANNIE'S STORY
About three
weeks ago, AARCS was made aware of 6 pups who needed our help. The owner
called to say she wanted to surrender them as she didn't have enough
food for them all. At the time we were unable to step in, being short
of foster space. However, the knowledge haunted us, and as soon as space
could be arranged, the rescue team sprang to action.
We were very fortunate to have the help of a new member of our rescue
team who knows the community well. He and his daughter were able to
catch the two pups in the worst shape, and were kind enough to transport
them to Sylvlan Lake, where they were met by yet another volunteer who
transported them to the foster mom who had driven from Edmonton. All
this took place on Good Friday.
Our rescue team member reported the pups "regurgitated" orange
peels all the way to Sylvan, in his vehicle. He was very distraught,
as were we all, to think these little ones had been trying to survive
on orange peels. Happily they are eating, drinking, and are slowly losing
their terror of the world. They are Annie and Katie.
The next day, four more members of the rescue team went to the community
with lots of food, dishes, water, and treats for the moms and other
pups. This time we were able to meet with the owner who let us take
two more pups. The remaining two stayed in the community and are the
dominant healthiest pups.
On the way back to Sylvan Lake, the pups were named Raini and Riker.
Both have issues with their skin, and interestingly are not siblings,
having been born to different moms. Raini is about 12 weeks old and
is quite tiny - 4.7 kgs, whereas Riker is about 15 weeks, and weighs
about 6.7 kg. Depending on donations and fund-raising, AARCS will be
able to spay both mom dogs.

If
you are interested in making any of these four pups part of your family,
please call Barb at 342-7156 or Melanie at 887-2925, or Stu at 227-2762
(all Area Code 403)
We estimate the pups will require at least 4 weeks of care before they
are ready to be adopted.
