BARKER AND BOOKER'S STORY
The coordinator
received a call from a concerned gentleman saying his female dog had
6 pups he wanted us to take into care. As the pups were very young,
we waited another 6 days then went to the community to receive them,
bring food for the mother and father dogs, and catch up on the news
.
We are blessed to have an enthusiastic and supportive foster mom who
volunteered to drive out to the community with the coordinator. Along
for the ride, and to help in the rescue were D's mother and 87 year
old grandmother.
When we arrived at the home, two sweet little pups popped their heads
out from under the house, and came to us happily. They were immediately
wrapped in warm "rescue" blankets and hurried out of the rain
into Gramma's waiting arms. The owner was not present, we found out
later, because his truck had boken down! He called us later to say thanks,
and tell us the other four pups are missing, he presumes taken by local
children. His plan was to go and find them as they are too young to
be unsupervised and not fed properly.
We
met the parents (pictured here-Mom

these
pups - both blonde and very affectionate dogs. We fed them, filling
up their bowl twice! We are hoping to get these dogs altered, with their
owners' permission.
Both pups were driven to The Sylvan Lake Vet Clinic to meet
Dr. Mattson, who came in especially for our rescue that day
(Saturday June 16th) We deeply appreciate his dedication to
these needy puppies. Dr. Mattson weighed them, Barker being a half pound
lighter than Booker. They were given de-worming meds and we were given
advice on feeding them. The next stop was the coordinator's house where
formula (milk replacer) was quickly mixed and put into bottles for their
first good feed. Both pups were very hungry and thirsty, and drank until
their bellies were round!!
Their foster family reports that both pups have passed huge amounts
of worms, and are now lapping well. They will eat rice pablum mixed
with mammalac until their tummies settle enough to add dry food to the
mix!
Update July 2007 Barker and Booker have been adopted.
