Boomer

Boomer's Story

One of our loyal volunteers was approached by a co-worker in a desperate situation with the family dog. It seems that they had been renting their home, and had been allowed to have "Boomer". Suddenly life changed when the landlord sold the property and the new owner would not permit the dog in the house or on the property at all. "Boomer's" then-mom is two weeks away from delivering a baby so moving was not an option.
"Boomer" became a truck dog, staying in his then-dad's truck at night and accompanying him to work during the day. That regime was really hard on the dog.

The phone lines heated up as our volunteers tried to find a solution for this gorgeous pure-bred golden lab, aged 7 years. It wasn't very long before someone stepped up to offer "Boomer" a warm and loving foster home, where he now resides. In the few days he has been there, and by the way, the surrendering owners delivered him and all his "stuff", tearfully,- Boomer has shown his understanding of a large vocabulary, a great willingness to please, and impeccable manners. We are so pleased to be able to help in this situation. Thankyou to all the dog angels who helped in getting Boomer to safety.
Update Nov 28, 2006
We have been a foster home for AARCS for almost a year now and during that time have opened our home and hearts to several canine friends as they journey to their "forever" homes. Many times, friends and family would ask "Why don't you keep this dog?" We always patiently explained that the program didn't work that way. It was our job to nurse these friends back to health, work on socializing and training and prepare them for a positive future. We already had a dog, a rather neurotic Shih Tzu, who didn't always cope well with sharing his home with rambunctious and overzealous canines, many of whom were enormous in his little eyes. We definitely were not looking for a permanent addition to our family.

All of that changed on November 6th when Boomer bounded into our lives. We had received a call on the 5th from the coordinator who was looking for a placement for this older gentleman. Given his situation, we agreed that he could come and live with us while we found a permanent placement for him. On the evening of the 6th, Boomer arrived accompanied by his distraught owner. As he leapt out of the truck, his first thought was to head for the snowbank and he proceeded to cavort and tumble, demonstrating such joy and zest that one could not help but smile at his happiness for fun and frolic! He came to be introduced to us and demonstrated impeccable manners, shaking "hands", grinning endlessly, (Yes, dogs do smile!) and sniffing Chester respectfully. It was obvious to us that this was a dog that had been an integral part of the family and knew only positive experiences at the hands of his owners. What a treat for us!

As days went on, Boomer settled in beautifully, never venturing onto the furniture, complying effortlessly with toileting expectations and amazing us with his vast vocabulary and willingness to please. We introduced him to friends and family constantly and he welcomed everyone into our home. Again, we were asked "Why don't you keep this dog? He's amazing!" Truth be told, as we became more acquainted with him, the thought began to "niggle" into our minds as well. Boomer would sit loyally at our feet and stare up at us with his soulful eyes which seemed to ask the question "Can I stay with you forever?" As calls began to come in for information about Boomer, we found ourselves thinking that our home just might be the best possible place for him - he had found his "forever" home and was waiting patiently for us to realize that as well!

We are so happy that Boomer decided to adopt us! We know he had a great 7 years with his first family and we hope that he can have just as many more with us. We have big shoes to fill but we know that Boomer will help us along the way! As for Chester, they love to play, share toys and chase each other through the house. He must have been waiting for Boomer too!
