Corky and Sulllivan's Story
after
the summer holiday, when the teachers arrived back in the community
to start the school year, one of them noticed a female dog had had pups
close to her teacherage.
She provided the female with food, and watched the pups carefully.
The teacher and the coordinator sing in the same choir, and at our first
rehearsal this fall, the teacher tapped the coordinator on the shoulder,
inquiring " are you still doing dog rescue?" We had a lovely
conversation, and the rescue began! By this time, she was also feeding
the puppies, who were now living in a culvert.
A
foster home became available and so the transport was arranged on the
dark and rainy night of Oct. 19th. The pups were examined and vaccinated
at the Sylvan Lake Vet Clinic. They each weigh almost 6.8kg.,
and were pronounced healthy. Just as the vet visit was wrapping up,
the foster family arrived to take charge of Sullivan and Corky. Each
puppy was wrapped warmly in soft blankets for the last leg of their
journey.
We don't know a lot about the mom except she is about knee height. Corky
and Sullivan look to be shepherd lab crosses, but could have other breeds
mixed in. There is no information on the father. Dr. Mattson's
best guess is they are 9 - 10 weeks old, so they would have been born
sometime in August.
Updated story after adoption from their
new adoptive family:
Sullivan and Dakota (previously Corky) are settling into their new home
very well. They were welcomed at home by 2 cats that they are very curious
about and just really want to play with; the cats aren't at the playing
stage yet but are very curious about the dogs also.
They are doing very well with house training and learning to walk on
their leashes. They are always together and don't like being apart at
all. We attempted to crate train them separate however they just cried
till they were back together. They play well together however do get
carried away from time to time, but they do listen well when told to
stop.
They are starting to learn some basic commands like sit and stay, and
now know that they need to sit before getting fed. They are also sleeping
through the night without making any mess.
They are growing everyday and we're sure soon they will grow into those
feet of theirs. They love to go outside to play and go for walks but
do not like it when their feet get too cold; they both run back inside.
Thanks to Barb and Mel for your help and support as we adopted Sullivan
and Dakota.
