What is AARCS?
AARCS is made of a large network of volunteers, foster homes and animal lovers. We are a non-profit animal rescue organization.
Where does AARCS get funding?
We rely completely on donations from the public, fundraising events, and adoptions fees. We do not receive any government assistance.
Do you have a facility?
We do not have a facility or shelter. Our organization is made up from a large network of foster homes, most in the Calgary area. All of our animals are kept in foster homes from the time of rescue until they are adopted to their forever home.
Do you have paid staff?
No. Our organization is 100% volunteer run.
Where do you rescue the animals?
Our mandate is to rescue small animals from First Nation Communities in Alberta. At the discretion of the board, we will take in animals in distress under emergency situations. A majority of our animals are dogs and puppies, although we will take some cats.
Who cares for the animals?
Our animals are all placed in our foster program with very loving volunteer families. Our animals receive veterinary care from a number of veterinary clinics in and around Calgary.
Will you take my pet that I need to surrender?
Our mandate is to rescue animals from First Nations communities where animal services are limited. Pets in urban areas have a number of other facilities available to help with re-homing surrendered pets. If you need to re-home your pet for any reason here are a few suggestions to try:
- Place an ad on websites like www.Kijiji.ca , www.buysell.com or local newspapers, the Bargain Finder, Western Buy and Sell etc.
- Place posters at local vet offices, bulletin boards, pet stores with an ad and a picture of your pet looking for a good home.
- Try other rescue organizations that accept owner surrendered animals. Very often rescues are running at full capacity. Ask if they have a waiting list; you never know- they may get an opening sooner then expected.
- Try Breed Rescues- Most cities or provinces have rescue organizations for purebred, cross bred, or look a like breeds.
- Shelters and Humane Societies- discuss with that facility how their system works and options available to you in the event your pet is not able to be placed in their system.
*** Always remember to carefully screen possible applicants coming to see your pet. Ask lots of questions, and make sure they spend some time with the animal to get a good idea of their true personality and request a small fee. Be fair and honest and disclose personality traits or habits which can be considered undesirable.
Be responsible - Always have your pet spayed/neutered prior to re-homing to ensure it is not used for breeding. If you have any doubts thank them for their time and move on to the next qualified applicant. Whenever possible leave yourself as much time as possible to re-home your pet to ensure a proper placement.

Who can adopt an animal from AARCS? Any person over the age of 18 who can demonstrate a proper, responsible and stable, loving environment and is approved by the adoption committee. We do have the right to refuse any adoption.
Do you adopt out of Province? We do not generally adopt out of province unless the location is within a reasonable distance for the purpose of home visits and follow ups.
How much are your adoptions fees? All of our dogs and puppies are $250.
Do they come with vaccines? Yes. All dogs are update-to-date on their vaccinations and dewormed.
Are the animals spayed/neutered prior to adoption? Yes, all dogs/puppies are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
What happens if I adopt an animal and it doesn’t work out and I need to re-home that animal?
AARCS tries to place all of our animals in their forever home but understand that sometimes circumstances change and that sometimes animals need to be re-homed. We will take back any former AARCS dog for any reason and/or provide assistance in finding the animal a new suitable forever home.
If I'm under 18 can I still help? A number of our positions are for people over 18 years of age but we do have other suitable positions for minors, provided they have parental permission. We also offer a reduced rate for membership for anyone under the age of 18.

AARCS has no paid staff and is run completely by a small group of volunteers concerned about the welfare of abandoned, abused and surrendered dogs in the province of Alberta. Our volunteers range in age from young children to seniors and all are animal-lovers who are looking to make a difference.
