What it means to be a Foster Family

 Alberta Animal Rescue Crew doesn't have a kennel/shelter or a holding facility so when an animal is rescued from neglect or abandonment, there needs to be somewhere to take them. This is where foster parents come in! We bridge the gap between a starving or hurt animal and their new life in a warm, secure, happy forever home! Being a foster parent is an incredibly fulfilling volunteer opportunity… It fits into my life and I can give the things I have...my home, my time, my energy, my love of animals…The time spent nurturing and loving an animal that may have never experienced that before is more than time well spent. Fostering is the foundation of AARCS. Without foster families we are powerless to help the many animals in need of rescuing. We do not have a shelter, therefore all our animals are placed in foster homes until they are adopted.
Here is what is involved
 AARCS pays all reasonable expenses, including but not limited to all veterinary care and food and will provide other items when available such as toys, treats, kennels, etc.
Foster homes provide a safe, loving environment until a suitable adoptive home is found and assists in providing basic training, house-training, and transportation to vet appointments, etc.
Conditions for fostering:
- Must be 18 years of age or older and all members of the household in agreement;
- All current animals in the home must be up-to-date on their vaccinations and dewormed;
- All current animals in the home must be spayed/neutered, unless reasonable explanation (i.e. medical condition, too young);
- Ideally a completely fenced yard, but we do have exceptions depending on the circumstances and type of dogs;
- If renting, a permission letter from your landlord;
- Commitment to the duration of the time the dog is in foster care, anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months+ (dependant on the dog and the time of year); and
- Signed waiver & release.

10 reasons you should foster for AARCS!
- Round the clock support; when you need us we will be there for you!
- Everything is provided for you. This includes, kennels, x-pens, blankets, towels, collars, leashes, toys, food, etc.
- Easy access to veterinary care with participating vet clinics around the city and surrounding towns, everything is billed directly so there are no out-of-pocket expenses.
- When you foster for AARCS, you become part of a special “family” and are treated like family. Your opinion matters.
- Foster families are apart of the adoption process and can decide if a home is not right for their dog.
- We are open to different training and raising techniques. For example, we do not require all dogs to be kennel trained.
- If you fall in love with your foster, you have first right to adopt your foster dog.
- We provide on-going support and training. If it’s not working out just call us and we will either try and help you through it or move the animal to a new foster home. Sometimes, certain dogs just don’t gel with a family… this doesn’t make you bad foster parents.
- Fun events to get foster families out to meet each other!
- AARCS rescues dogs in your back yard, here in Alberta! These dogs do not have ANYONE to help them except for us. The majority of dogs we rescue will die of starvation, disease, parasites, being killed by other animals or be shot if we do not rescue them.
