Maddox's Story
MADDOX
AND ZAHARA'S STORY
Because these little rascals refused to be transported last Friday,
the rescue crew arranged to meet the puppies' "Grampa" in
the community and then go to their home the following day It was a beautiful
sunny day, and fairly warm as Alberta winter days go!
We had brought treats, meat, smoked bones, dog cookies, while the owner
had a can of their favorite food, to tempt the little guys into our
arms. The smallest puppy, now called Maddox, came fairly easily and
was quickly cuddled into a warm fuzzy blanket. The larger of the two,
and quite a smart little one, came for the treats but not very close,
then would retreat again, under the porch. It became apparent that to
rescue her, we would have to crawl under the porch.
Very fortunately, our young volunteer, Maddison, is slender and strong,
so she volunteered to slither under the porch and gradually direct the
pup into a corner where another slender volunteer waited. Finally, Barb
could get her legs and gently slide her out, where "Zahara"
could be wrapped in a fuzzy rescue blanket, and placed in the vehicle.
Both little pups, named on the way to the Sylvan Lake Vet Clinic,
were content to sleep in the laps of the youngest of the crew, all snuggled
and warm. They were offered water along the way and after some initial
sniffing, they each caught on and drank!
Little Maddox weighed in at 6.6 kg (apporx) and has a healing wound
on his head, courtesy of his big sisters. Food aggression is common.
However, he is healthy and will catch up his weight quickly.
Zahara (click

weighed in at a whopping 9.81 kg and was pronounced healthy! Both pups
received their vaccinations and de-worming. After that ordeal, both
were taken to Barb's foster home for a few days until our Calgary crew
could collect them. The pups rested and cuddled lots by family members,
and gradually became brave enough to approach humans, and other dogs!
It was magic.
Both Maddox and Zahara were transported by foster parents Paul and Natasha
over some very wintery roads. Maddox met with Deanna who lives near
Calgary and is fostering him, and Zahara is with Paul and Natasha, also
in Calgary.
Thank you hugely to all the volunteers involved in this rescue, both
from the First Nations community and from AARCS. Thanks also to our
foster parents, new and old.
