Nevaeh, Seth & Timber
About
a week before Christmas a call came from a lady who was very concerned
about three very young puppies, survivors of a litter of nine, hanging
around her home. Many attempts were made to arrange transport but the
puppies did not arrive.
Thus, prayers were said, and hope for their survival diminished.
Then, the coordinator was able to contact the lady who was so relieved
to know we could still take the three little ones, now very thin, being
unable to compete with the adult dogs for food. Daily attempts to feed
them were not very successful, she said.
Last night, after survivng the blizzard and minus 30 temperatures, the
three little ones were delivered to the coordinator's home. The surrendering
family, and the new foster family all arrived at the same time! A warm
medicated bath was waiting for these three, who were absolutely terrified.
The foster team of 7 formed an assembly line for bathing, drying, feeding
and watering, and de-worming. During the process, naming took place
and we welcomed Seth, Timber, and Neveah to our AARCS
family.
Within an hour, each puppy was bundled against the cold, in warm blankets
for the short ride to their foster home, where they were made comfortable
for the night. The foster family has three teens who adore dogs so the
puppies were very patiently treated.
Today they visited Dr. Mattson at The Sylvan Lake Vet Clinic
for assessment. Timber is the heaviest, and has suffered frostbite
to one his foot pads, and several other places. He is the most frightened,
and it is thought he has been kicked or hit. All his wounds will heal,
and his trust is already starting to build. Seth is our blonde boy,
very malnourished, with frostbite burns as well. His wounds will also
heal well, and with time his trust will build. He is already aproaching
for pets without food being offered.
Neveah (heaven spelled backwards) is about 4kg lighter than
her brothers, and very wary but warming up. She has suffered some trauma
to her head, and is being watched closely to make sure there are no
complications. She is bright and alert, with no signs of brain injury.
She is extremely malnourished but has eaten lots already. All the pups
were severely de-hydrated as well so are drinking with pleasure!
Though they look quite different from each other, they are litter mates.
Their mom is said to be a brown dog, father unknown.
Thanks to those who got the puppies to us, to the foster family and
their friend, and to Dr. Mattson for the giant effort on behalf of Seth,
TImber and Neveah, aged 10 - 12 weeks.
Update
27January2007: The pups are coming out of their shells
more and more everyday!
Timber was the worst off at first, but his
foster family is now able to approach him without him being totaly terriifed
and he now knows what a Belly rub is and quite enjoys them!
Nevaeh is doing Wonderfully also-- she's still
a little shy but... approachable and Loves to Play, Play, PLay!!
Seth is the most mellow-- he's like the old
man out of the bunch-very Loveable and Hugable.
The pups are going for their shots next week as they have all gained
enough weight that they can have that done now and once thats done,
they can be off to new adoptive homes!!!
Oh and the boys are already going to the back(door) to go out to Pee!!--
Pretty smart kids hey!
Update 5 February 2007: Timber
and Neveah are making progress by huge quantum leaps! Both the puppies
are approaching people for greetings, and enjoying the reward of being
praised and petted. Very often, when one pup has been adopted, the dynamics
between the others changes dramatically, and it seems that is what is
happening. Neveah has caught up socially very nicely, and is gaining
weight as is Timber. Both pups are growing very fast, and we expect
they won't reach their desired weight for a couple of more weeks. However,
they are healthy! Timber has wag enough in his tail for 2 dogs! Neveah
will be the smaller of the two - sweet girl!
Update 27 February 2007 Neveah
has been updated.
Update
11March 2007 Timber has
been adopted.
