Story

AARCS received a call from family in desperate need to place five growing puppies. Their current dog was not spayed and “accidentally” got pregnant while on holidays. The puppies were living in a dog-run in their backyard and despite their efforts they could not find homes for them. Rescue was their last resort or they would be forced to euthanize them. Unable to think about five innocent pups being killed we found room in our foster program to take them, ON THE CONDITION that the family spay their current dog.

AARCS would like to take this opportunity to stress the importance of spay/neuter. As part of being a responsible pet owner it is imperative that you spay/neuter your animals. “Accidents” do happen (all the time) and innocent lives are lost every day because irresponsible pet owners “accidentally” have a litter unwanted pups. Even if you own a pure-bred dog that doesn’t give you the right to bred her. There are hundreds of pure-bred dogs in shelters and rescues because of irresponsible breeding and there are more then enough unwanted animals to go around justifying bringing more into this world… Do the right thing, spay and neuter!

Update Apr 9, 2010

I don’t think Jackie had been in a home before arriving here. She was afraid of every little noise. Just turning on the TV made her run to the opposite side of the room. Now she has adjusted very nicely to all the household sounds. The sound of the vacuum still makes her run, but lots of dogs do that.

I think Jackie will make a great family companion & possible protector. She uses her fabulous hound voice to alert us when someone arrives on our property, but will quiet down quickly when told to shush. She gets along well with other dogs, but loves her people best. She will play a bit with the three cats in the house but most times just ignores them. Jackie was a huge help in making our foster huskies a-just to our home. She took on the big sister roll showing them how things flow here. When one of them gets to carried away with chattering she gently covers it’s mouth with hers like a mother would to shush them. I’ve nicknamed her “The Nanny”.
Jackie is mostly outdoor trained.
She is working on her manners for mealtime. I can put my hands on her & in her dish & take bones away. You have to watch her though as she will try to sneak someone else’s food.
She knows how to sit & stay for a short time. She is learning to lay down. She is good at waiting to have her feet cleaned when she comes in from outside. She comes when I call her.
She sleeps in her crate through the whole night.
Jackie gets car sick, but I think she will out grow it with short incremental practice rides & a big reward at the end of each trip.
Jackie is learning how to walk with a leash.

Jackie has a very easy going personality & is eager to please her people. She loves affection & will seek it out to the point of butting in front of the other dogs. This sweet girl also will take advantage of a good snuggle on a bed if invited. You are not going to want to miss out on this laugh inducing sweetheart.
