Snoopi's Story

AARCS was requested to rescue two brown dogs from a home so arrangements were made to do that.  When we reached the home, only one brown dog was to be seen and was not the correct brown dog, or so we were told.  Instead we were pointed to a deserted home nearby where several dogs apparently were in need of help.  Thus we made our way there.

Food was poured on the ground for several hungry dogs then suddenly, from around the corner of the house, came a smaller, matted, and obviously injured, pregnant dog.  She was eager to eat!  We invited her to be rescued and she agreed readily!

She was taken to the Sylvan Lake Vet Clinic where Dr. Marv Mattson and his staff, examined her and x-rayed her to determine the extent of her injuries.  By then she had been named "Snoopi".  Although reluctant at first to enter the vet clinic through doors, she soon agreed.  When she was examined she was good natured despite having her leg moved all over the place.  X-rays revealed she is about 1 week from delivering about 5 pups, and that her pelvis is intact so she can deliver safely.  However, her right hip had been injured to the extent that, at 10 months old, she is to begin glucosamine supplements, and should not over exercise her hips.  The untreated injury has healed as best it could but has left her with permanent damage.

Snoopi was transported to her foster home, where a very experienced foster dad awaited her arrival.  This mornings' update advised that she has eaten heartily, had lots of "cookies" and has chosen a person to sleep with!  Her whelping box is being prepared as we write!  Snoopi will stay at her foster home for about 3 - 4 months to gain strength, whelp, raise her pups, and finally get spayed.

Snoopi is likely a spitz breed crossed with husky or ??  She weighs approximately 20 lbs. and is very malnourished.  She is blonde with a longish coat and fluffy tail.  Dr. Mattson says she is 10 months old, and this pregnancy was the result of her first heat.  Snoopi will visit the groomers to clean up the many matts, and take the grime and oil from her fur prior to the birth of her pups.
Update 25April 2008: From 2:30 a.m. to approximately 6 a.m., Snoopi gave birth to 6 healthy puppies - 5 girls and 1 boy. Mom and pups are doing very well.  Snoopi has not left her whelping box all day!  She was assisted by her foster dad, and his female chow who attended the birth of the last 3 pups, and helped with the afterbirth.  Animals are amazingly cooperative and trusting.  Congratulations Snoopi, and family!
Update 25Jun08: Snoopi has been adopted.
